- With at least one open cell available, the top card from a tableau can be temporarily placed into that cell.
- This allows the next card in the sequence to be moved to another tableau if valid.
- After the underlying card is placed correctly, the original card can be moved back onto it.
- Computer versions automate this process visually, although players using physical cards perform the steps mentally.

Unsolvable FreeCell Deals
Although FreeCell is known for its extremely high solvability rate, a small number of deals cannot be completed, no matter how optimally they are played.

- In 2018, researchers Theodore Pringle and Shlomi Fish analyzed 8.6 billion FreeCell Pro deals.
- They discovered that 102,075 of these deals were unsolvable.
- This means approximately one deal out of every 84,000 is impossible to win.
- Overall, about 99.999% of all FreeCell games remain solvable.
A well-known example is deal number 11982 from the classic Windows version of FreeCell. It is the only unsolvable deal among the original Microsoft set of 32,000 deals.
