Super Smash Flash (2006) | Play Online Classic Video Game

Relive the 2006 flash classic. Play Super Smash Flash online and battle as Mario, Sonic, and Goku in the ultimate browser-based platform brawler.

Game Intro: A Flash-Era Love Letter to Smash

Back in 2006, before we had official portable Smash Bros. or official cross-platform indie brawlers, a developer named Cleod9 (Greg McLeod) and the team at McLeodGaming did something incredible. They packaged the chaotic, fast-paced essence of Super Smash Bros. Melee and crammed it directly into a standard web browser.

Super Smash Flash isn't just a clone; it’s a time capsule of internet culture. Because it’s a fan-made project, the roster goes places Nintendo never could. Alongside staples like Mario, Link, and Kirby, you get to fight as classic anime icons like Goku, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Blue from Pokémon. It has that distinct, charmingly rough-around-the-edges Flash aesthetic, but underneath the 2D sprites is a surprisingly competent fighting engine that perfectly captures why we fell in love with platform fighters in the first place.

How to Play: High Percentages and Ring Outs

If you've played any game in the Smash series, you’ll feel right at home here, though you'll need to adapt to the unique flow of this 2006 classic.

  • The Goal: Forget traditional health bars. Your only objective is to batter your opponents until they fly off the screen.
  • The Damage Meter: Every hit you land increases your opponent's damage percentage at the bottom of the screen. The higher that number ticks up, the further they fly when you hit them with a heavy attack.
  • The Strategy: Because this original version is a bit floatier and more simplified than its modern sequel (Super Smash Flash 2), positioning is everything. You want to bait your opponent into the corners or the edges of the screen, rack up their damage quickly, and land that one solid "KO" hit to send them into the blast zone.

Controls: Mastering the Keyboard

Because this is the original 2006 release, the control scheme is a bit more streamlined than a standard console controller. Every character has a compact kit of five core moves. You'll rely heavily on combining directional inputs with your primary attack keys to execute special moves, with a few characters getting unique aerial options.

Player 1 Controls

  • Move / Jump: Arrow Keys (Left, Right, Up, Down)
  • Standard & Special Attacks: P key (Combine with Arrow Keys for different moves)
  • Taunt: O key
  • Pause Game: Backspace

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on your character's recovery moves. Since you're playing on a keyboard, execution needs to be precise to make it back to the ledge after being launched!
