Abalone - Play Two-Player Abstract Strategy Board Game Online

Play Abalone online, the classic two-player abstract strategy board game. Push your opponents marbles off the board, master tactical formations, and outthink your rival in this timeless strategy challenge.

Game Intro

Abalone is a classic two-player strategy board game that rewards careful planning, positioning, and tactical thinking. Originally created by Michel Lalet and Laurent Lévi in 1987, the game is played on a distinctive hexagonal board using black and white marbles. While the rules are easy to understand, mastering the game takes practice, as every move can create opportunities or expose weaknesses.

The goal is simple: force six of your opponent's marbles off the board before they do the same to yours. Every turn becomes a battle for space and control, where clever formations and well-timed pushes often decide the outcome.

Unlike traditional board games that rely on luck, Abalone is entirely skill-based. Success comes from reading the board, anticipating your opponent's plans, and maintaining strong marble formations throughout the match.

How to Play

Each player begins with 14 marbles placed on opposite sides of the board. Players take turns moving their marbles, with the black side making the first move.

On your turn, you may move one, two, or three connected marbles in a straight line. These marbles can move one space in any of the six directions available on the hexagonal board.

There are two main types of movement:

Inline Movement

Marbles move forward or backward along the direction of their formation. This type of move allows players to apply pressure and push opposing marbles when they have a numerical advantage.

Broadside Movement

A group of marbles moves sideways while maintaining its formation. Broadside moves are useful for repositioning and strengthening your defensive structure.

One of the most important mechanics in Abalone is pushing. If your line of marbles is larger than the opposing line directly in front of it, you can force the opponent's marbles backward. For example:

  • Two marbles can push one opposing marble.
  • Three marbles can push one opposing marble.
  • Three marbles can push two opposing marbles.

Lines of equal size cannot push each other. As the game progresses, successful pushes can force enemy marbles closer to the edge of the board. Push six of your opponent's marbles off the board to win the game.
