Dots and Boxes is a timeless strategy game that transforms a simple grid of dots into a competitive battle of planning and patience. Originally introduced in the 19th century by French mathematician Édouard Lucas under the name La Pipopipette, the game has remained popular for generations thanks to its easy rules and surprisingly deep strategy.
Dots and Boxes is a classic strategy game traditionally played with pencil and paper by two players, although it can also be enjoyed by larger groups. The game was introduced in the 19th century by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas, who originally named it la pipopipette. Over the years, it has become widely known under several alternative names, such as Dots and Dashes, Game of Dots, Dot-to-Dot Grid, Boxes, and Pigs in a Pen.
The objective is simple: connect dots to create boxes. While the rules are easy to learn, winning consistently requires careful planning, as one careless move can give your opponent the chance to claim several boxes in a row. Whether you're challenging a friend or practicing against the computer, every game offers a different puzzle to solve.
This online version lets you enjoy the classic experience directly in your browser without needing paper or a pencil.
How to Play
The game begins with a grid of evenly spaced dots. Players take turns drawing one horizontal or vertical line between two adjacent dots.
Whenever you complete the fourth side of a square, that box becomes yours. You earn one point for the completed box and immediately get another turn. This creates opportunities to chain together multiple boxes if you plan your moves well.
The match continues until every possible line has been drawn and the entire grid is filled. The player who has claimed the most boxes at the end of the game wins.
Although the rules are straightforward, experienced players know that timing is everything. Avoid creating easy opportunities for your opponent, and think several moves ahead before completing lines around unfinished boxes.
