Game Boy Classic Review
Donkey Kong Land 2 is a side-scrolling platform game released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1996. Developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, it serves as the handheld counterpart to the hugely popular Donkey Kong Country 2 on the Super Nintendo. Rather than simply copying its console version, the game offers its own levels, layouts, enemies, and challenges while keeping the familiar atmosphere and gameplay style that made the series popular.
This adventure follows Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong as they set out to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of King K. Rool and the Kremling crew. Despite the technical limitations of the original Game Boy hardware, Rare managed to create a surprisingly large and detailed platformer packed with secrets, collectibles, and creative level designs.
For players using the Super Game Boy accessory, the game also included enhanced colors and a themed border, giving it a more polished presentation on a television screen. Like the first Donkey Kong Land, it was released in a distinctive yellow cartridge that helped it stand out among other Game Boy titles of the era.
How to Play
The main objective is to guide Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong through a series of challenging levels spread across multiple worlds. Each stage is filled with enemies, hazards, hidden areas, and collectibles that reward exploration.
Both playable characters have unique strengths. Diddy Kong moves quickly and has agile jumps, making him useful for precise platforming sections. Dixie Kong, on the other hand, can use her spinning ponytail to glide through the air, helping players reach distant platforms and recover from tricky jumps. Switching between the two characters at the right moment is often the key to overcoming difficult obstacles.
Throughout the adventure, you'll travel across a variety of environments, including pirate-themed locations, forests, swamps, icy landscapes, and other distinctive areas. Many levels contain hidden bonus rooms where players can earn extra lives and collect valuable rewards.
Bananas are scattered throughout every stage and serve as the game's primary collectible. Gathering enough bananas can earn extra lives, while collecting the K-O-N-G letters hidden in each level provides additional bonuses. Players can also use barrel cannons to launch across large gaps and discover secret routes.
Animal friends occasionally join the adventure as well. Rambi the Rhino can charge through enemies and barriers, while Expresso the Ostrich offers increased speed and jumping abilities in certain sections.
At the end of each world, players face a boss battle that tests the skills learned throughout the preceding stages. Success requires careful timing, observation, and mastery of each character's abilities.

Why Donkey Kong Land 2 Stands Out
Many Game Boy adaptations of the 1990s were simplified versions of their console counterparts, but Donkey Kong Land 2 feels like a complete adventure in its own right. The level designs are original, the challenge is well-balanced, and there are plenty of secrets for completionists to uncover.
The game successfully captures much of the charm and atmosphere of Donkey Kong Country while adapting the experience for portable play. Even today, it remains one of the stronger platformers available on the original Game Boy and an enjoyable entry in the Donkey Kong series.
