Kirby Mass Attack (2011) | Nintendo DS Video Game

Discover Kirby Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS. Read our player-perspective guide on how to command a swarm of ten Kirbys using unique stylus-only gameplay.

Game Intro: A Brilliantly Weird DS Swansong

By 2011, you might have thought the Nintendo DS had run out of ways to surprise you, but then HAL Laboratory dropped *Kirby Mass Attack*. Instead of the usual copy-ability platforming we’ve grown used to, this game throws a massive curveball: you aren’t controlling one pink puffball with a D-pad; you’re managing a literal swarm of up to ten tiny Kirbys using nothing but your stylus.

The setup is classic Kirby charm with a dark twist. While chilling out on the Popopo Islands, Kirby gets ambushed by Necrodeus, the leader of the Skull Gang, who uses a magical staff to split our hero into ten weaker clones before trying to wipe them out. Only one survives, guided by a floating star that represents his own heroic heart. From there, it's up to you to explore the archipelago, gather your fragmented selves back together, and march an adorable pink army right to Necrodeus's doorstep to fix what he broke. It’s easily one of the most unique, experimental entries in the entire franchise, and a perfect final bow for the character on the DS.

How to Play: Managing the Pink Horde

If you've ever played *Lemmings* or *Pikmin*, the core vibe here will feel familiar, though it's entirely built around touch-screen physics. You start each stage with just a single Kirby. To build up your forces, you need to hunt down fruit scattered across the levels—munching on enough apples and bananas spawns another Kirby until you have a full squad of ten.

You’ll want to keep that number maxed out because *Mass Attack* scales its challenges around your crowd size. Some stages literally won't let you through the door without a certain number of Kirbys, while heavy obstacles, massive switches, and specific puzzles require the raw physical strength of all ten clones working together.

Combat is pure, chaotic fun. Instead of inhaling enemies, you overwhelm them. Tapping a baddie sends your entire squad dog-piling onto them like a swarm of angry, cute bees. But you have to be careful; managing a crowd means it's easy for a stray clone to get left behind or clobbered. When a Kirby takes a hit, he turns blue. If he takes another hit, he turns grey and starts floating away to the afterlife as a ghost. You have a split second to frantically grab him with your stylus and drag him back to earth before he's gone for good. Luckily, finding glowing recovery gates will heal your blue Kirbys back to health.

The game also rewards thorough exploration. Every level hides golden medals that require smart puzzle-solving or hunting down keys to unlock treasure chests. Collecting these isn't just for completionists—they unlock an incredibly deep stash of bonus minigames, ranging from a fully realized Kirby pinball game to a surprisingly addictive RPG.

Controls: Ditching the Buttons

Kirby Mass Attack completely ditches the traditional DS button layout. You can put your hands on the D-pad and face buttons all you want—they won't do anything here. The entire game is played exclusively with the DS stylus and touch screen.

  • Movement: Tap and hold the touch screen to create a guiding star. Your crowd of Kirbys will mindlessly run toward this star, clinging to it if you hold it in mid-air to carry them across gaps.
  • Swarming & Attacking: Double-tap a specific spot or an enemy to make your Kirbys dash there and automatically begin pummeling whatever is in their way.
  • Flicking (Projectiles): Drag your stylus over an individual Kirby and flick them. This launches them like a projectile, which is essential for shattering cracked blocks overhead, hitting flying enemies, or reaching high-up items.
