Game Intro
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story isn’t just another Mario RPG—it’s easily one of the most creative and genuinely funny games in the entire Nintendo DS library. Stepping away from standard Mushroom Kingdom拯救 projects, AlphaDream decided to literally flip the script by shrinking Mario and Luigi down and shoving them inside the digestive tract of their ultimate nemesis, Bowser.
The setup is brilliant: a bizarre disease called "The Blorbs" is causing Toads to inflate to monstrous proportions. When Bowser is tricked by the manic villain Fawful into eating a "Vacuum Mushroom," he accidentally inhales the Mario brothers, Peach, and half the kingdom's residents. From there, you are left managing a hilarious, involuntary team-up. Bowser is stomping around the overworld trying to reclaim his stolen castle, entirely oblivious to the fact that the Mario brothers are running around his guts, stimulating his muscles, and helping him win fights from the inside out.
How to Play
The gameplay is a brilliant dual-screen balancing act. While Bowser explores a top-down overworld, Mario and Luigi navigate Bowser’s insides as a 2D side-scrolling platformer. The magic of the game lies in how these two perspectives constantly influence each other. For instance, if Bowser drinks an enormous amount of water, the 2D cavern Mario and Luigi are in will suddenly flood, allowing them to swim to previously unreachable high ledges.
Combat keeps the series' signature turn-based style but demands active involvement. You can't just select an attack and watch it happen; you need to time your button presses perfectly to deal extra damage or completely dodge incoming enemy strikes.
Bowser plays entirely differently than the brothers. He relies on brute force, punching through obstacles, and breathing fire. He also has a unique "Inhale" mechanic during combat. If an enemy is too tough for him, Bowser can swallow them whole, transferring the battle down into his stomach where Mario and Luigi have to finish the job. Both parties have access to powerful special moves that require specific mini-game inputs, like using the DS stylus to launch Koopa shells or timing a series of brotherly jumps.
Controls
The control scheme takes full advantage of the Nintendo DS layout, mapping specific buttons to specific characters so you never get confused during exploration or fast-paced battles.
- A Button / Z Key: Controls Mario’s actions (jumping, hammer swings, and battle commands).
- B Button / X Key: Controls Luigi’s actions (jumping, hammer swings, and battle commands).
- X & Y Buttons: Controls Bowser's actions (punching, breathing fire, and overworld navigation).
- DS Touchscreen: Used extensively for Bowser’s special minigame attacks and navigating menus.
- Built-in Microphone: Used during unique giant boss battles where you turn the DS sideways and blow into the mic to unleash massive fire attacks.
