Pokémon Crystal (2000) | Original Game Boy Color Video Game
Play Pokémon Crystal, the enhanced Game Boy Color adventure that expands on Pokémon Gold and Silver with an improved story, animated Pokémon sprites, the Battle Tower, and the series first female playable trainer.
Pokémon Crystal is the enhanced version of Pokémon Gold and Silver, released for the Game Boy Color in 2000. While it follows the same adventure through the Johto region, Crystal adds enough new content and refinements to make it feel like more than a simple re-release. For many longtime fans, it remains one of the most memorable entries in the series thanks to its expanded story, improved presentation, and several features that would later become series standards.
Your journey begins in New Bark Town, where you receive your first Pokémon and set out to collect Gym Badges, battle rival trainers, and uncover the mysteries surrounding the legendary Pokémon Suicune. Unlike Gold and Silver, Crystal places greater focus on Suicune throughout the story, giving players additional events and encounters that help make the legendary Pokémon feel more connected to the adventure.
One of Crystal’s most notable additions is the ability to choose between a male or female trainer at the start of the game, marking the first time players could select a female protagonist in the main Pokémon series. Another memorable improvement is the introduction of animated Pokémon sprites, which briefly move when entering battle and bring the creatures to life in a way that felt impressive on the Game Boy Color hardware.
Although the core gameplay remains familiar, Pokémon Crystal offers enough extra content and polish to stand out as the definitive version of the second-generation Pokémon experience.
How to Play
The goal of Pokémon Crystal is to become the Pokémon League Champion by exploring the world, building a strong team, and defeating Gym Leaders across the Johto region. Along the way, you'll encounter wild Pokémon that can be captured and added to your collection.
Battles play out in a turn-based format where each Pokémon uses attacks, status moves, and abilities to defeat opponents. Winning battles grants experience points, allowing your Pokémon to level up, learn stronger moves, and evolve into more powerful forms.
Exploration is a major part of the adventure. New towns, routes, caves, and hidden areas gradually become accessible as you earn badges and unlock special abilities. Players can also trade Pokémon, complete their Pokédex, search for rare creatures, and challenge powerful trainers throughout the region.
Crystal also introduces the Battle Tower, a special challenge area where players face consecutive battles under specific rules. Success in these battles rewards players with valuable prizes and offers an extra challenge beyond the main story.
After completing the Johto League, players can continue their adventure by traveling to the Kanto region, effectively giving the game a second set of Gym Leaders and additional content to explore.

Why Pokémon Crystal Still Stands Out
Even years after its release, Pokémon Crystal remains one of the strongest versions of the classic Pokémon formula. The expanded storyline, animated battle sprites, female playable character, and Battle Tower give it a distinct identity beyond Gold and Silver. Combined with the huge amount of content packed into a handheld game, it continues to be a favorite among fans revisiting the Game Boy Color era.
