Sonic Advance 3 (2004) | Sega Game Boy Advance Video Game

Play Sonic Advance 3 on Game Boy Advance, a fast-paced 2D platformer featuring Sonic and friends. Explore seven zones, collect Chaos Emeralds, unlock the true ending, and master unique character team combinations.

Game Intro

Sonic Advance 3 is the third and final entry in the Sonic Advance series for the Game Boy Advance, released in 2004 by Sega and developed by Sonic Team and Dimps. Building on the fast-paced gameplay of the previous games, it introduces a unique team system that lets players pair different characters together, creating new ways to explore stages and reach hidden areas.

The story begins when Doctor Eggman launches another plan for world domination. With the help of his powerful robotic assistant Gemerl, Eggman shatters the planet into separate regions and starts taking control of each one. Sonic and his friends set out to stop him, traveling through a variety of zones filled with enemies, obstacles, and secrets.

What makes Sonic Advance 3 stand out from earlier handheld Sonic games is its focus on character combinations. Instead of choosing a single hero, players select a leader and a partner, and each pairing changes movement abilities and access to different parts of the game. This gives the adventure a surprising amount of replay value, especially for players who enjoy uncovering every secret.

How to Play

The goal is to race through stages, defeat enemies, collect rings, and clear each zone before facing Doctor Eggman in a boss battle. The game features seven main zones, and every zone contains three acts followed by a boss encounter.

Like most classic Sonic games, speed plays a major role. Players dash through loops, launch from springs, grind along rails, and navigate platforming sections while avoiding hazards. Rings act as protection against damage. As long as you have at least one ring, getting hit won't immediately cost a life. However, losing all rings and taking another hit will cause your character to lose a life.

Throughout the stages, hidden Chao can be found. Collecting all ten Chao in each act of a zone unlocks a Special Stage where players can earn a Chaos Emerald. Gathering all seven Chaos Emeralds unlocks the game's true final battle and complete ending, giving completionists an extra challenge beyond the main adventure.

The team mechanic adds another layer to gameplay. Different character combinations can access alternate routes, hidden items, and shortcuts that other teams cannot reach. Experimenting with various pairings is often the key to finding every collectible and exploring everything the game has to offer.

Characters

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic is the fastest character in the game and is ideal for players who enjoy maintaining momentum through levels. His speed makes him well-suited for quickly clearing stages and reaching alternate paths.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Tails can fly for short periods, helping players cross gaps and reach elevated areas. His aerial abilities make exploration much easier in many zones.
