Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) | Nintendo NES Video Game

Play Super Mario Bros. 3, one of the most beloved NES platformers ever made. Explore eight unique worlds, discover classic power-ups, battle the Koopalings, and help Mario rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser.

Game Intro

Super Mario Bros. 3 is widely regarded as one of the finest platform games ever released on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Originally launched in Japan in 1988 before reaching players worldwide, the game expanded the Mario formula in ways that would influence the series for decades.

The adventure follows Mario and Luigi as they travel across eight distinct kingdoms on a mission to rescue Princess Toadstool and restore order after Bowser and his seven children, known as the Koopalings, take over the Mushroom World's rulers. Each world introduces its own theme, enemies, and environmental challenges, giving the journey a constant sense of variety.

What made Super Mario Bros. 3 stand out at the time was how much larger and more ambitious it felt compared to earlier entries. The addition of a world map, hidden secrets, collectible items, and memorable power-ups transformed the game into a much deeper experience while keeping the fast-paced platforming that made the series popular.

How to Play

Your goal is to guide Mario or Luigi through a series of side-scrolling levels filled with enemies, hazards, and hidden secrets. Each world contains multiple stages connected by an overworld map, allowing you to choose routes, visit bonus areas, and unlock new paths as you progress.

Most levels require careful jumping, enemy avoidance, and precise movement. Classic foes such as Goombas, Koopas, and other familiar Mario enemies stand in your way, while castles and fortresses act as major checkpoints before reaching each world's boss.

Coins collected throughout levels can earn extra lives, while hidden blocks and secret areas often reward curious players with useful items. Exploration is encouraged, and many levels contain shortcuts, hidden exits, and valuable power-ups that can make later stages easier.

One of the game's biggest highlights is its collection of power-ups. The Super Leaf allows Mario to transform into Raccoon Mario, giving him the ability to fly for short distances and attack enemies with his tail. The Tanooki Suit offers similar abilities while adding extra defensive advantages. These power-ups open new ways to explore levels and reach hidden areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

As you advance through the eight worlds, the challenges become increasingly difficult. You'll encounter giant enemies, dangerous airships, desert landscapes, icy stages, underwater sections, and Bowser's heavily guarded territory. Learning enemy patterns and mastering movement becomes essential for reaching the final showdown.
