Super Mario Land was one of the standout launch titles for Nintendo's original Game Boy, arriving in 1989 and bringing Mario's platforming adventures to a handheld system for the first time. Instead of traveling through the Mushroom Kingdom, players explore the mysterious land of Sarasaland, a region made up of four distinct kingdoms inspired by different cultures and themes. The story follows Mario as he sets out to rescue Princess Daisy after she is kidnapped by the alien invader Tatanga. Along the way, players encounter unusual enemies, navigate challenging stages, and face several bosses before the final showdown.
Although the Game Boy's hardware was more limited than Nintendo's home consoles, Super Mario Land successfully adapted the classic Mario experience for portable play. How to Play
The objective in Super Mario Land is to guide Mario through a series of levels while avoiding enemies, hazards, and environmental obstacles. Each stage scrolls from left to right, requiring careful jumps across gaps, moving platforms, and dangerous terrain.
Throughout the adventure, players can collect coins, defeat enemies, and find power-ups hidden inside blocks. The Super Mushroom increases Mario's size, allowing him to take an extra hit, while the Superball Flower gives him the ability to throw bouncing projectiles that can defeat enemies and collect coins from a distance.
One of the game's most interesting features is the inclusion of two special stages that break away from traditional platforming. In these levels, Mario pilots either a submarine or an airplane in shoot-'em-up sections inspired by classic arcade shooters. These stages introduce different gameplay mechanics and provide a refreshing change of pace from the standard platforming levels.
At the end of most stages, players can attempt to reach a higher exit point above the regular goal. Successfully reaching it grants access to a bonus game where extra lives or additional rewards can be earned.
